What are the implications of social distancing going forward
As we start to rumble along into Spring 2021, my retail client's have had some lockdowns, trading periods and now time to fully review their estate of stores, having had nearly one year of covid-19 trading.
There are lots of issues to do with cost control and cash flow, however one that keeps coming up is "social distancing instore".
Clients are now deciding that narrow stores may not be viable any more, if the guidance is to continue for any length of time.
One client told me that she has to reduce her sales area capacity by some 90% if she was to comply with the guidance and the number of people instore at any one time.
Based on this she has decided to end the lease, close and leave a town she has been in for some 20 years.
While this is one person's decision, others may well be facing the same issues and decisions.
